Now that all the final details of your reception are set it’s time to start thinking about the important details for your ceremony! Music is one of the most memorable parts of your wedding, from the walk down the aisle to the final dance at your reception the big day will be full of music. If you’re looking for a way to make your ceremony even more memorable and unique then this V-O-W will be music to your ears (literally). We spoke with Teri Larson from the Basilica Cathedral Choir about what they offer for weddings and how to make yours even more memorable.
Q: What does the Basilica Cathedral Choir specialize in?
A: We specialize in classical repertoire and 20th century a capella repertoire, perfect for elegant wedding ceremonies.
Q: How long has the choir been around?
A: I came to this post 21 years ago. Back then it was a choir of about 35 members, now we have grown to 90 members!
Q: Do you perform at a lot of weddings?
A: We typically perform about 4-5 a year—mostly at The Basilica of Saint Mary.
Q: What makes Basilica Cathedral Choir stand out compared to other choirs in the area?
A: We pride ourselves in the depth of repertoire we have and of course our spirit-filled singing.
Q: What are three words that would describe the choir?
Q: What do you like about a live choir for wedding ceremony music over other music options?
A: A live choir offers support to the ceremony, especially in congregational singing. It embodies the message in the choral art that a couple may want as they think about their commitment to the other.
Q: What is an average day with the Basilica Cathedral Choir like?
A: For a wedding day, we sing 2-3 prelude pieces, a piece at vows or preparation of the altar (in a Catholic mass) A piece at communion procession, or meditation during other actions, such as lighting of a unity candle.
Q: What would you want a couple searching for her perfect wedding ceremony music to know?
A: Music is extremely important to create the mood and inspiration of a ceremony. It is well worth the money and effort! It is important to speak to the director through your wedding planner to know what repertoire is available from a choir.
Q: What is some of your favorite wedding ceremony music?
A: A few of my personal favorites would be… Ubi caritas, Durufle. Hymn of Thanks, Krubsack. Light Everlasting, Christiansen. Ave verum, Mozart. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Bach.
Q: Do you have any memorable moments from the choir singing at weddings you could share?
A: Probably the most memorable moments are when our own choir members have gotten married! One in particular processed to “I Was Glad” by Parry—Princess Kate processed to this, it was beautiful!
Q: Anything else you would like us to know about the choir?
A: Although we are a Catholic choir, we are ecumenically-minded.
