Wedding Season is officially in full swing, and although this season of love is fun for everyone involved it can also cause some unneeded stress when it comes to the dress code. As a bride it is important that you are candid and clear about your expectations and preferences for not only the day of your wedding but also all the other wedding activities, (think rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, bachelorette party) because let’s face it, there is nothing worse than showing up to an event and sticking out like a sore thumb because you are way over or under-dressed (Mean Girls Halloween Party anyone!?). To ensure you are the best dressed guest this wedding season we are diving into what wedding dress codes really mean and giving you some great examples too!
This is the most formal wedding dress code, this is your chance to really play dress up and pull out all the stops!
For Him: Men should wear a tuxedo, a long jacket with tails, a vest and a bowtie. If you really want to run with the theme include white gloves.
For Her: A full-length ball gown! Don’t forget to add some statement jewels as well as hair and makeup. We love Rent the Runway for these formal occasions because it allows you to rent designer label formal gowns for a reasonable price.
For her: Allison Parris Cobalt Marilyn Gown $100 Rental from Rent the Runway ($485 retail)
For him: Calvin Klein Black Slim Fit Tuxedo from Men’s Wearhouse $699
Formal or Black Tie Optional:
If your invite includes this dress code it means that you are expected to dress formal but not quite as formal as black tie. A tuxedo is not required but you would not be out of place if you wear one.
For Him: Men should wear a tuxedo or a formal dark suit and tie or bowtie.
For Her: A long evening gown is still your best bet but a formal cocktail-length dress would be appropriate as well. Still include statement jewelry and a formal hair and makeup combo.
For her:Halston Heritage Peony Crepe Gown $70 Rental from Rent the Runway ($375 retail)
For him: Kenneth Cole New York Blue Slim Fit Dinner Jacket from Men’s Wearhouse $99
This dress code is a step below black tie and black tie optional. Tuxedos and floor length gowns are not required in this case.
For Him: A suit and tie. Its always a good idea to follow seasonal cues and wear darker colors in fall and winter, (dark navy, black and charcoal) and lighter tones in summer (light grey or blue).
For Her: A cocktail dress and heels.
For her: Gemma Halter Lace Sheath Dress $119 from Nordstrom
Although this wedding is taking place at the beach, it is still going to be a formal event, so don’t pull out your flip flops yet! Think about what you would wear to a formal restaurant on vacation and go with something similar to that. In this occasion you need to ensure that you are still dressed appropriately for the weather and environment, so light airy fabrics are always a good choice!
For Him: a “summer suit” with a linen shirt, linen pants or khakis.
For Her: A formal style sundress that is tea or knee length.
For her: Enchanted Navy Blue Floral Print Midi Dress $103 from Lulus
For him: Andrew AIM Flat Front Linen Trousers $99 from Nordstrom
Semiformal or Dressy Casual :
Dress somewhere between formal and casual. In this case you will want to dress according to the time of the event. If it is in the evening wear darker colors that lean slightly more towards the dressy end of the spectrum. If the event is earlier in the day you can wear lighter colors.
For Him: A suit or sport coat, a tie or bow tie is optional
For Her: A cocktail dress or a dressy jumpsuit or skirt and top.
For her: 19 Cooper Sleeveless Jumpsuit $47.98 from Lulus
For him: Ben Sherman Black and White Plaid Sport Coat $399 from Men’s Wearhouse
Casual or Daytime:
Technically this means you could get away with whatever attire you feel best in. Keep in mind that this is someone else’s wedding day though, so jeans and shorts are still innaporptiate. Think about what you would wear out to dinner or in a business casual setting.
For Him: Dress pants and a dress shirt or polo.
For Her: A sundress or skirt. You could also wear a nice pair of pants with a dressy top.
For her: Elly Wrap Dress by Lush $29.40 from Nordstrom
For him: Murgese Trim Fit Geometric shirt $79.90 from Nordstrom
