Unless you’re a celebrity, you’re probably not getting professional hair and make-up done every day. So when it comes to your wedding, how do you know what to look for? What questions do you ask? Here are suggestions for hiring a makeup artist that will help you through the process of hiring the pro that will make you look your most beautiful on this all-important day.
- Look at their work. This might sound intuitive, but look closely at it. If it’s heavy handed and you’re wanting more of a natural look, this might not be the artist for you. Alternatively, if you want to embrace trendy make up and the artist tends to use a light hand with more traditional looks then perhaps you aren’t simpatico with this particular person.
2. Talk to past clients. And ask more than “did you like them?” Ask if the artist returned calls in a timely manner. Were they prompt on your wedding day? Did they accommodate requests? Getting info on their personality thru past clients is a good indication of what it’s like to work with them, and after all, you’re going to want to be around easygoing people on a day that’s likely to be emotional.
3. Look at their make-up kit. No, you’re not checking out the products, but you are looking at the cleanliness level inside the bag. Do they take care of their brushes? (Remember those are going on your skin). Does the make-up look fresh or years old? These are all clues as to how this person treats their supplies, which would be going directly on to you.
4. Always have a contract. It’s much easier for both the client and the artist if everything is spelled out in advance. This avoids last-minute add-ons (a mother, an aunt, a best friend, etc) that can affect the timing and scheduling of your day. And when the artist states clear cut costs you know what to expect when you get that invoice.
