Are you a stylish bride looking for something a bit out of the ordinary, custom, and chic? Minneapolis bridal shop, Flutter Bridal Co., carries all the latest wedding dress trends that you have to see.
Not only does this shop have gowns from designers all over the world, but they also have an in-house designer, Colby John, who has curated an expansive collection of fully customizable gowns. We chatted with the CEO, Owner, and Designer himself to discuss all things bridal trends and what makes him tick.
Q: Let’s get to it, what’s your business’ specialty?
A: At Flutter Bridal Co., we specialize and welcome you to join us in thinking a little outside the box! Are you setting your own trends? Stepping away from the expectations of what everyone is wanting, expecting, or thinking you’ll do? Do you want to rock what you were meant to rock!? Whether it be a custom-designed gown by Colby himself or a gown from our current stunning collection when you walk through our door take a deep breath of fresh air and know that you just joined team bride! Flutter is an independently owned, inviting, intimate, quaint, weird, quirky, modern, traditional, chic, and unique bridal salon prepared to do bridal YOUR way.
Q: Where can we find you?
A: You can find us and our killer window display at:
43 SE Main St,
Suite 141, Minneapolis, MN
Right next to Wilde Cafe on the river!
Q: Tell us when and how your business began.
A: Flutter Bridal Co. has been in the Twin Cities for nearly a decade and a half starting as only a bridesmaid boutique, but it wasn’t long before we began transitioning to designer bridal while residing in the Semple Mansion! We shortly outgrew the old space and chose to move over to our new and current location in NE Minneapolis! In the summer of 2019, Kolby Kipp Fahlsing sold Flutter to Colby John, the owner of Diamond Bride, and Kolby went on to grow her beautiful family. Same name, both from Iowa, and both passionate about the same industry in Minnesota? Weird, we know.
Q: What makes Flutter Bridal Co. unique from others?
A: The most unique trait of all and one that definitely sets us far apart from everyone else is that our owner, Colby John, has his own collection of bridal gowns that he designs every season! Our store is full of customizable gowns, and with most of his gowns, you can change absolutely anything you want about them! Want a new skirt? Different neckline? Too sexy? Too plain? Want a jumpsuit? You’ll probably never hear the word “NO” come from us.
Q: How long have you been in the industry? What do you think has changed the most since then?
A: Colby himself has been in the industry for almost 10 years dressing thousands of brides, and the one thing he has noticed that differs the most from 2012 are the trends! Brides are far more daring than they used to be, and with so many drastically different options hanging in our store it’s very exciting and quite inspiring to see how unique our brides get with their ensembles.
Q: Walk us through your average day.
A: Average day? HA, that doesn’t exist! Our *favorite* days are Saturdays and Sundays! The brides are coming in every 90 minutes, on the minute, with their entourages! It’s amazing to get to see the store buzzing with excitement and to have the opportunity of working with so many different brides every day!
Q: What would you want couples searching for your business type to know?
A: I think it’s best for our brides to know that from the second they step into our space that we are 100% on their side. What the bride wants the bride most certainly gets, and it’s important they know that we are a safe place, welcome to all, and most importantly free of all judgment.
Q: How far in advance should a couple book with you?
A: We recommend at least 7-10 months prior to the wedding date to ensure time for alterations. Creation time is usually 6-7 months and we recommend having the dress in your hands 3 months before your wedding! On a short timeline, however? We will happily let you take home any gown from the store on the same day as your appointment and begin alterations immediately at our sister-store Diamond Bride.
Q: What’s your favorite wedding fashion trend lately?
A: Sleeves and modernism. We love a gown that sits apart from your typical traditional aesthetic whether it be a plunging sheer bodice, boho chic, colorful, art deco, or not even a dress at all!
Q: What wedding dress trends can we expect to see more of this year?
A: Simplicity, beaded laces, and unique novelty fabrics that you typically wouldn’t see in a bridal store. Don’t forget that timeless doesn’t have to be plain and simple all while remembering that plain and simple doesn’t always have to be boring.
Q: What’s your best piece of advice for couples on the hunt for their gown?
A: I tell everyone to start this process with a fearless, yet optimistic, mindset. Everything changes when you slip into a gown for the first time, and more often than not it is nothing like what you had originally pictured yourself in nor was it as hard as you imagined! Don’t be too shocked if you find the one after only a few dresses honestly. It happens way more than you think. Beautiful things happen when you least expect them.
LIGHTNING ROUND!
Q: Do you have any favorite podcasts?
A: Crime Junkie with Ashley Flowers!
Q: Who’s your most played artist on your streaming service?
A: RuPaul, Ariana Grande, or some Reba McEntire.
Q: Heels or flats?
A: Really? 4” minimum.
Q: Mountains or Beach?
A: Mountains! Preferably the Swiss Alps.
Q: Go-to cocktail (or mocktail)?
A: Raspberry Lemon Drop Martini. I never waiver!
Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A plastic surgeon, actually! I started school in medicine before leaving college for the bridal, pageant, and prom industry.
Q: You’re at brunch. Are you going for something sweet or savory?
A: I literally always order strawberry French toast with my omelette because I can never decide!
Q: Go-to comfort food?
A: Casey’s General Store pepperoni or breakfast pizza!
Q: Duck Duck Grey Duck or Duck Duck Goose?
A: Duck Duck Goose because I’ve never seen a grey duck.
It was great chatting with you, Flutter Bridal Co.! If you’re interested in booking an appointment, head to their website to begin the journey.
