If you’re looking for an eye behind the camera that can truly capture authentic moments at your wedding, get to know MVphotos! Not only does this husband and wife duo offer photography AND videography packages, but they’ll travel with you to your destination wedding or elopement!
We chatted with founder Madalyn Vermeer about telling a couple’s story and how she got her husband, Logan, on the bandwagon to join her business!
Q: Let’s get to it, what’s your business’ specialty?
A: Our business’ specialty is in wedding, elopement, destination, or engagement photography & videography.
Q: Where can we find you?
A: We are located 20 miles North of Minneapolis in Ramsey, MN, but willing & able to travel wherever.
Q: Tell us when and how your business began.
A: Our husband and wife duo business of photography and videography officially began 4 years ago after I, (Madalyn) had been doing just photography as a hobby/side job 4 years prior to Logan joining and offering our clients videography services as well.
I specifically remember having our nightly ‘pillow talk’ with Logan one night before we went to bed and randomly asked him what he would think about offering videography to MVphotos clients (since I knew he was gifted in this area) and his response was, “I was just waiting for you to ask me!” haha. Logan had been a part of a different company as their Marketing Manager and created some promo videos prior to joining MVphotos. After asking him the rest is history, as cliche and corny as it sounds, I knew it was just magic and even more success waiting to happen once he joined me.
Q: What makes your company unique from others?
A: Unlike most MN wedding companies, MVphotos is unique in the fact that we offer both photography & videography services to our couples, or they’re welcome to book us separately. Typically brides & grooms will have to hire the two companies separately which from hearing past testimonials, can cause somewhat of a headache when they want to have both. We’ve also heard from our couples, that only a handful of wedding photography and videography companies are husband and wife owned. We both built MVphotos from the ground up and besides our second shooters, we’re a two-man run biz. Most, if not all our couples, can see the uniqueness and worth in hiring us for that reason alone.
Q: How long have you been in the industry? What do you think has changed the most since then?
A: Together we’ve been in the wedding industry for almost 6 years. So much has changed since we first started together! Not only have we been able to witness many trends and styles change but most importantly, our skill sets. Every time we shoot a wedding together, we feel like we learn another valuable lesson on how to serve our couples even better than the wedding we did before. We’re constantly striving and editing our skillsets for the better and I think that’s part of the fun of being in the wedding industry for as long as we have. There always seems to be something to learn from and look back on.
Q: Walk us through your average day.
A: We are both major night owls but also HUGE sleepers. We typically wake up around 10 am, (I know right – so embarrassing! But hey, perks of working from home! LOL) play with our black lab, Kelty, catch up on our editing and emails, In the evening we LOVE to unwind by going fishing on our boat, cooking up a creative dinner recipe together, reading, or taking the occasional walk or jog around our neighborhood block.
Q: What would you want couples searching for your business type to know?
A: Our number one priority when couples end up searching for our business type is for them to instantly know and sense that we will be there for them throughout the whole entire wedding planning process. We want them to feel like we’re BFF’s and that we 1000% have their backs. It’s important to us that they already can get a strong feel for the real us and our authentic, fun, and candid shooting style without even meeting us. From first glance at our website or any other social media platform, we want our couples to know they can trust us in capturing their special day as perfect as they see fit.
Q: How far in advance should a couple book with you?
A: We typically advise our couples to book us as soon they can, because when we book, we book fast! On average our couples will book us about a year in advance.
Q: What’s one wedding trend you’re over?
A: Haters gonna’ hate, but we’re both so over the sparkly converse or tennis shoe trend. We’re all for comfortability on your wedding day but those puppies need to GO or, at least, make their appearance on the dance floor. lol
Q: What’s hot in wedding photography and videography right now?
A: Right now we’re seeing a lot of couples want/ask for more candid and journalistic images and shots instead of posed. Which is totally our jam! We’ve noticed a lot of couples ditching the traditional aspects of weddings and are focusing more on what makes THEM happy on their wedding day. Adventurous elopements and intimate wedding shoots are becoming more popular and trendy in our industry as well and we’re all for it.
Q: Describe your photography/videography style.
A: Both our photography and videography style is best described as candid, authentic, warm, journalistic, adventurous, vibrant, and moody.
Q: Do you ever travel to shoot weddings? If so, what has been your favorite destination so far?
A: YES! We freakin’ love to travel to shoot weddings! In fact, our main goal is to become a strictly travel-based photo & video company in the future. So far we’ve loved shooting on the beaches in the Dominican Republic, but we’ve been dying to shoot a couple in the mountains, desert, or frozen glacier one day. We have a wedding in Northern California come this November that we’re super jazzed about. For us, the more unique and different the destination, the better!
Q: What are your hobbies and passions when you’re not behind the camera?
A: We both love going fishing or on boat rides, swing dancing, going on motorcycle rides, cooking, trying out new wineries or breweries, camping or traveling to places we’ve never been before. Logan loves to play guitar, sing, hunt, snorkel, and travel. Madalyn loves to read romance novels, bargain shop, cook ethnic meals, and travel. Basically, anything that involves adventuring and being outdoors, we both love it!
LIGHTNING ROUND!
Q: Duck Duck Grey Duck or Duck Duck Goose?
A: Grey duck. Always. 😉
Q: Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall Wedding?
A: Can we choose all of the above?!
Q: Veil or no veil?
A: YES to a veil! Even if you only wear it for a few epic and dramatic veil shots. (9/10 of our brides ask us to take cool veil shots. We’re sort of known for those.) Otherwise, we’re strong believers in a flat-brimmed hat or a flower crown as an amazing second option.
Q: Mountains or Beach?
A: Mountains. But we’d be equally happy with either. <3
Q: Chocolate or Vanilla?
A: Logan says Chocolate, Madalyn says Vanilla.
Q: Go-to comfort food?
A: A big-fat bowl of Thai red curry for Madalyn and a huge slice of lasagna for Logan.
Q: Who would you like to sit next to on a plane?
A: AHHH this is hard! We both said we’d want to sit next to each other! (Cheesy we know.)
Q: What show are you binging right now?
A: We currently hopped on the Game of Thrones bandwagon, but our favorite show to binge is called Younger on Hulu. We’ve been anxiously waiting for the next season to come out! If you haven’t seen it, go watch it and I can guarantee you’ll be hooked.
Q: Go-to cocktail (or mocktail)?
A: White Sangria for Madalyn and an Old Fashioned for Logan.
