Trusting someone with your wedding day beauty is a huge task. You want someone who is knowledgeable and will teach you the steps to great skincare! Emily Schuette of Mary Kay helps brides and bridesmaids create a great routine so they are empowered to create their own looks for all wedding-related events. Meet Emily below and see what she says are the latest trends in wedding beauty.
Q: Let’s get to it, what’s your business’ specialty?
A: Skin care & color cosmetics-application & products
Q: Where can we find you? (Location)
A: I work all over MN, but live in the south metro
Q: Tell us when and how your business began.
A: I started in 2004 after my college friend invited me to a makeup clinic! I fell in love and got started on doing the same myself.
Q: What makes your company unique from others?
A: We use a teaching approach to skincare & makeup so you can actually work on skin imperfections and recreate the look I teach you at home.
Q: How long have you been in the industry? What do you think has changed the most since then?
A: I’ve been in the wedding industry since 2008. I have this saying that “everything has changed and yet nothing has changed”. Women still want to look great, each at their own level, but how we accomplish that has changed. I think overall the industry has changed to be more DIY friendly.
Q: Walk us through your average workday.
A: After getting my family situated, I’m training other beauty consultants, on Zoom doing virtual beauty sessions, popping in with a current client to find the perfect lip shade, helping with last-minute skincare/makeup emergencies. It’s always different depending on what people need!
Q: What would you want couples searching for wedding beauty services to know?
A: I would want them to know about my teaching approach! I get together with brides/wedding parties way ahead of time and teach you how to take care of your skin and step-by-step makeup application. I believe a wedding is more than a day, it’s all the parties leading up to it and after it. You’ll want to look great for engagement parties, showers, bachelor/bachelorette activities, engagement photos, honeymoons, AND the day of the wedding. The skills I empower people with help them accomplish that on their own, saving time & money!
Q: How far in advance should a bride or groom book with you?
A: As soon as they’re engaged—it’s never too soon! I also do last-minute consultations for any of the spur of the moment types 😊
Q: What’s one wedding trend you’re over?
A: Heavily contoured faces for a bride.
Q: What’s hot in wedding beauty right now?
A: Glowing, moisturized, natural-looking skin is always in! With all the time home during the pandemic, brides have been focusing on switching skincare routines and adding in exfoliators like Microdermabrasion to help reverse any damage. I have also seen makeup trends go bold-bold lip, sparkle, high fashion looks, and bold eyeliner which all break up the monotony we’ve seen this last year with the pandemic. My advice is to choose one and run with it!
Q: Where do you find inspiration for wedding beauty?
A: From the brides themselves! I like to pick a feature the bride loves most and show her how to play it up! I always encourage people to go bolder than usual, but not so bold that people won’t even recognize you at all your special events.
Q: What are some of your favorite products to use on clients?
A: I love getting clients on a skincare routine! Proper skin care helps with oil control, dryness, glow, etc. For long-lasting wedding makeup, a great silicone-based foundation primer and makeup setting spray are a must! And I NEVER recommend skipping cheek color! Brides who wear cheek color and lip color look more radiant in their photos!
LIGHTNING ROUND!
Q: Duck Duck Grey Duck or Duck Duck Goose?
A: I’m from Wisconsin originally and didn’t even know duck duck grey duck existed until I moved to MN.
Q: Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall Wedding?
A: Fall for the beauty, but who doesn’t want a fun party in the winter to break up the boring?
Q: Veil or No veil?
A: Veil for the ceremony. Ditch it for the party!
Q: Mountains or Beach?
A: Mountains. All the skiing I can get!
Q: Chocolate or Vanilla?
A: Vanilla!
Q: Go-to comfort food?
A: Tortilla Chips & queso
Q: What celebrity would you like to sit next to on a plane?
A: Kelly Clarkson—I love how real she is!
Q: What show are you binging right now?
A: The Mare of East town
Q: Go-to cocktail (or mocktail)?
A: Love me a cold Paloma on a hot patio.
