“Perched above the shores of Lake Superior, we chose this location while we were on a vacation to the North Shore. One look at the view from the ceremony and we knew that’s where we wanted to say “I do,” recalls Karly about her wedding location. And the couple incorporated nature in every aspect of the wedding from the save-the-dates and invites to the views of Lake Superior during the ceremony, rock ceremony and gondola ride.
“The natural beauty of our venue reflected our love of nature and the outdoors. Many of our friends and family would need to travel to Minnesota already, so we figured why not show them the most beautiful part of the state,” explains Karly. She also noted that it was significantly less expensive to host the wedding there than in the Twin Cities, something for those to note who are looking for cost effective, yet still beautiful accommodations.
For the ceremony, Karly and Joe went a non-traditional route with a rock ceremony, “We didn’t want to have a traditional wedding ceremony, but we wanted to have some sort of meaningful ritual involved.” So earlier in the day before the ceremony, the bridal party got rocks from the north shore and wrote messages to the couple on them.” They’re now a part of a display in our bedroom,” says the bride.
Bridesmaids donned dusty rose dresses while the groomsmen wore blue suits inspired by the surrounding Lake Superior. Karly’s bouquet, “relied heavily on native flowers, though it was accented with succulents. Each boutonniere had a succulent as well. The use of native plants fit the earthy vibe of the wedding.”
When it came to reception décor, the couple started looking for decor items a year before the wedding. “We tried to purchase things we could use in our homes as everyday décor [items] after the wedding, which included gold geometric candle holders.” Karly also incorporated lanterns that her cousin used in her wedding a few months prior. The matching lanterns have now become something that will be passed down to others in the family to use when they get married.
Looking back on their wedding day, the couple has some words of wisdom for those planning a destination wedding, “You’ll have limited opportunities to examine details beforehand, so you’ll want to be comfortable not necessarily knowing exactly how everything will look, taste, etc.” On the other hand, she was very comfortable with her surroundings which helped a lot. “The simplicity of being surrounded by stunning views was major. It was wonderful not stressing too much about décor because we were surrounded by great scenery.”
While Karly and Joe enjoyed their “festive and genuine” wedding, they both had different favorite moments of the day. Karly’s favorite moment was walking down the aisle, seeing her friends and family gathered to witness her ceremony, Joe’s favorite moment was at the end of the night, “Riding the gondola down this hill with my wife at the end of the reception [was my favorite moment]. It was the first moment alone we had since getting married and it gave us time to reflect on all the love we felt for each other.”
