You can’t say it was love at first sight for Courtney and Charlie because they met back in the 7th grade. But after middle school, high school, college, and even a decade of a long-distance friendship that remained without any romantic involvement, they started to date. After all of that time, Courtney tells us, “He was always one of my first calls when I came back into town, but it wasn’t until I moved back that we decided to give dating a try. Clearly, it was a good idea.”

And when you’re with someone a long time, a surprise engagement is hard to pull off. Charlie found the perfect setting in a poppy field in Tuscany, where he proposed and later that night they celebrated with Courtney’s family.

For their nuptials, Courtney, a self-professed “neutral person,” loved the modern boho barn wedding vibes, “I was really inspired by the setting of the Round Barn Farm.  I loved the beautiful meadow setting of the ceremony site and the vintage charm of the Bed & Breakfast. We fell in love with the Round Barn Farm as soon as we saw it.  We loved that it had large grounds for people to explore and that it wasn’t your traditional ‘farm’ venue.  We liked that there were distinct locations for each part of the day and that nothing had to be reset.”

PERSONAL TOUCHES

With about 300 people in attendance, Courtney and Charlie exchanged vows they wrote themselves and added other personal touches to their boho barn wedding. “We wanted each person to know how grateful we were that they were there so we wrote individual thank you notes to each guest to have at their place setting when they sat down for dinner.  Our goal for the reception was to have it feel laid back and fun!  We loved that the Round Barn Farm property had enough room for everyone to spread out and enjoy the cocktail hour. We also had a dream come true by having our favorite local cover band (Viva Knievel) play! We had seen them many times at various block parties around Minneapolis and knew they would bring the party – they did not disappoint!”

A FLORAL LINK TO THEIR PROPOSAL

As for their florist, Courtney could only rave, “Ashley Fox Designs is a true artist! A friend of mine recommended her and I quickly fell in love with her work. I wanted the flowers to have a real wildflower quality and to feel very natural and organic. When I first met Ashley, I told her the story of our engagement and that we were overlooking a lake surrounded by a beautiful red poppy field and asked if we could incorporate them. She said poppies were out of season in August, but she would see what she could do. She surprised me the day of with a few red anemones (very similar to a poppy) in my bouquet! We also got creative with our place cards because we needed something that wouldn’t fly away on a windy day. We decided to give everyone a small bud vase with their name on it with a single stem representing their food choice. It served triple duty as their place card, table décor, and a favor!”

“I wanted something different for my bridesmaids as well.  We used brass craft rings and wrapped them with flowers and ribbon that each girl carried with them and then they served as décor during dinner. Ashley also made the cutest flower collar for our dog too!”

For the bridal gown, Courtney fell in love with a BHLDN gown, and “I loved this dress from the second I saw it online and loved that I could just try it on at home.  I ordered 3 dresses and tried them on with my sister and mom one night.  I immediately knew that this was the one!  It felt perfect for the venue and the vibe we were going for.  I loved that it was modern, but had detailing that gave it a vintage quality.”

“We had the wedding portraits of each of our parents and grandparents on display with the desserts.  These were also very special because we collected dessert bar recipes from each side of our families and the caterer made them.  What’s more Minnesotan than a ‘Bar’ Bar??  We had recipe cards printed out for people to take with them so they could enjoy these recipes for years to come too.”
