Wedding Trends Look Book 2016: Lipstick
Inspired by the red carpet, we return to glamour. With pops of red and smoky cosmetic colors, we created a suave and sexy vision for this wedding design. This concept would include lacquer black, mirrored finishes, and the allure of a luscious red gloss that can only be summed up in one word: LIPSTICK.
The three things that came to mind for us in creating this lipstick wedding experience were the glamour of old Hollywood, the world’s most decadent Monte Carlo Casino, and, of course, Grace Kelly. This evening-inspired design was to be lavish, yet fun, elegant and sophisticated, contemporary and sexy!
The ceremony would be sleek and tailored. We created a dramatic ceremony aisle with crystal chandelier lamps that featured black string shades. Placing these on mirrored cubes, we could emphasize the height of the walls, which were draped in luxurious silver with black velvet burnout damask fabrics. Along the walls, we placed oversized mirrors to visually expand the space. We also incorporated subtle uplighting along the damask walls to add another layer of dimension.
Guests would be seated on striking black gloss Louis Chairs with a bold red damask patterned program on each chair. The eye-striking and signature piece was the red polka-dot aisle runner we bought off the bolt at Mood Designer Fabrics in New York City, which is made famous from the TV show, Project Runway. Utilizing juxtaposition throughout the design elements we were able to carry out this classic, yet modern feel.
For the focal point of the altar, we created a stunning backdrop from a custom twelve-foot ice wall with an intricate scroll motif. To accentuate the altar, we incorporated gloss white trumpet vases and a silver leaf cypress table. On each trumpet vase sat the stylized floral, which featured mounds of red roses and other lavish floral in deep reds while a collection of silver and clear candle holders would accent the altar.
Behind the ice wall, we revealed the cocktail lounge complete with red ‘Kiss’ sofas and a full bar. The look featured more stunning red floral sets on clear smoke vases while gloss white accents with bulbous candlesticks and a chinoiserie box sat upon a large square silver timber coffee table.
While the lounge was designed in red with pops of white and black, the reception was the inverse: black and silver with pops of red. The reception would include a grand seated dinner with a regal setting for the wedding party and square tables of eight set for guests. The environment was staged with more striking damask draping and large gloss black baroque frames.
We selected a damask fabric to create a custom runner that was the entire width of the table and accented the light of candles atop ornate white glossy candlestick holders to illuminate the space. The runner was a red and silver damask that was a companion fabric to the polka dot material we used for the aisle runner. It began at the floor on one end of the head table and ran all the way to the floor on the other end.
This paired beautifully with the underclothes, which were a pewter crinkle fabric. Each place setting at the head table featured textured crocodile chargers, ornate gold and black china, modern stemware, and acrylic menus that were screen-printed with the red damask pattern and personalized with each of the guests’ names.
For the guest tables, we chose a striking black rose-inspired linen, red lacquer chargers, and complimentary china. The centerpiece for the head table mimicked the florals and vases from the cocktail reception. Beyond the guest seating, we placed a gloss white dance floor and a stage for the band, flanking the dance floor with soft seating and cabaret tables where guests could watch all the activity. The evening was a celebration centered on the glamour of LIPSTICK.
