Whether you’re looking for intricate custom cookies for your wedding or a simple naked cake, Sweet Lulu’s will help you create the dream dessert for your day! We talked to the owner, Lori, about what sets her bakery apart and her favorite wedding dessert trends.
Q: Let’s get to it, what’s your business’ specialty?
A: We specialize in custom cakes, cookies, and cupcakes for all occasions.
Q: Where can we find you?
A: Our online shop at Sweetlulus.net and @sweetlulusbylori on Instagram and Facebook
Q: Tell us when and how your business began.
A: I moved from Illinois to Minnesota in 2017 to be with family and liked the Twin Cities area so much that I decided to stay – and give life to my dream of baking professionally. Sweet LuLu’s was established in 2017.
Q: What makes your company unique from others?
A: We deliver a product that not only looks beautiful but tastes delicious! We believe that the entire cake should be edible, which has driven us to perfect our buttercream flowers and decorating techniques. Why spend time removing non-edible decorations when you could be eating cake?!
Q: How long have you been in the industry? What do you think has changed the most since then?
A: Although Sweet LuLu’s is only three years old, we have been in the cake business for over 20 years. It has been fun to see wedding cake trends change over the years, from traditional white cakes to very colorful and unique cakes. What I am loving now is that couples are making their cakes and weddings so personal and adding elements that are unique to them!
Q: Walk us through your average day.
A: I like to break up the cake making process – I bake, mix buttercream, design and decorate on different days of the week.
Q: What would you want couples searching for your business type to know?
A: They need to know that there are a lot of wedding dessert options these days! They don’t have to have a white wedding cake just because it is traditional. Come to appointments with an open mind and be ready to brainstorm about how you want the look and feel of your special day to be!
Q: How far in advance should a couple book with you?
A: At least three months.
Q: What’s one wedding trend you’re over?
A: The constant use of social media to measure up. It’s a great tool to get some initial ideas, but the creativity should flow from there.
Q: What’s hot in wedding desserts & cakes right now?
A: Buttercream cakes are really popular right now. I also see couples choosing a variety of desserts to please their guests.
Q: What can we expect to see more of in party cakes & desserts in the future?
A: I think trends will continue to push the limits – who would have thought donuts hanging on a board would ever be a wedding dessert?! As a business owner, it’s very fun to design new desserts and ways of presenting them.
Q: What are your other hobbies and passions besides creating delicious sweets?
A: Coffee! Paper crafting/mixed media, and playing the piano. And coffee : )
Q: What show are you binging right now?
A: Sweet Magnolias
Q: You’re in charge of the lineup for your dream concert. Who are your headliners?
A: Any orchestra that would play Rachmaninoff, Grieg and Debussy.
Q: Gold or Silver?
Q: Black Tie or Casual?
A: Black Tie
Q: You’re at brunch. Are you going for something sweet or savory?
Q: Favorite board game?
Q: Do you have any favorite podcasts?
A: The Bible Project
Q: Mountains or Beach?
