"Natural lips in shades of pink and peach are always a timeless choice for a fresh-faced look."
Even if you’re wearing a mask these days, one thing is for certain: a bride needs the perfect lip color for her wedding day! We spoke to experts who beautify brides on the daily — and a few local connoisseurs — to get the scoop on the hottest lip colors for 2021. Here’s what they had to say….
LIP COLOR TREND #1: NATURAL BEAUTY
An Ulta Beauty spokesperson told us, “Natural lips in shades of pink and peach are always a timeless choice for a fresh-faced look. Cream and gloss lip finishes will give brides a healthy and luscious appearance.” KKW Beauty has a variety of shades that will work to achieve this look, and L’oreal Paris makes beautiful lip stains as well.
Katherine McCall, Event Coordinator at Face Time Beauty loves Pillowtalk by Charlotte Tillbury. “It’s a perfect nude pink and looks great on most skin tones. This color comes in both matte and silk finishes depending on the bride’s preference. Another pinkish nude we recommend is the Rose Illicite from YSL in their liquid matte lip stain formula. This stay-all-day lipstick brings a matte finish with a lightweight feel. A bridal go-to!”
LIP COLOR TREND #2: RED WILL ALWAYS BE POPULAR
If you usually wear a pinky natural hue and want something deeper or darker for your wedding (after all it IS a day to stand out!) there are plenty of red shades that work for brides that aren’t too dramatic. McCall has suggestions for red shades, “If a bride is looking for a little more of a POP, we love Dragongirl by NARS. It’s a gorgeous, vibrant red and, again, works on skin tones across the board. The Velvet Lip Pencil formulation of this is hydrating while still having a finish that isn’t too shiny or matte.” Reds come in so many shades great for every skin tone, here’s one from Beautycounter that really makes a statement.

The Ulta spokesperson we spoke to says even though 2020 brought everyone home and then eventually out in masks, new lip trends are on the horizon, “As the pandemic has inhibited lips due to mask-wearing, we believe people will be eager in the year ahead to make a big statement through bold lip looks in bright and deep hues that exude positive energy. More vibrant and standout lips let brides confidently display their individuality and personality without even saying a word. Shades of red, red-orange, and berry-stained lips are also sure to be popular choices in 2021.”

MAC reds and Urban Decay Cosmetics’ Vice Lip Chemistry Lip Stains are great long-lasting products that will look fresh throughout the day.

A local Beautycounter representative, Cassie, says a favorite of her’s is the Beautycounter Color Intense Lipstick: 9 to 5 in Luminous Mauve. Great for any occasion from a bachelorette night out to walking down the aisle.
One area makeup artist agrees that this will be a trend in lip colors for 2021, “I hope more people try out mauve lipstick with a purple undertone. It’s universally flattering and makes your teeth appear whiter,” says local influencer Roxy H (known as @roxytries on Instagram). “My favorite is Provocateur by Huda Beauty. It’s a tantalizing brown with hints of purple.”
Both Roxy and another Twin Cities makeup artist, @darrahraebeauty, think gloss is going to be hot, “Gloss has made a comeback! One of my faves for every day or subtle glam is Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fu$$y,“ says Darrah. Roxy also loves this brand with her choice color being Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow.
