First Dance Songs: Advice from the Pros
All of our experts had different takes on what’s popular for the First Dance. According to Aaron Strawn of DJAA, “Ed Sheeran is still king when it comes to the first dance. I don’t know if anyone will take him down, but a song I frequently see requested is Dan + Shay’s ‘From the Ground Up’.”
While Thomas Kling of Northern Sound Entertainment says Dan + Shay’s “Speechless” seems to come up all the time because of its length, tempo, lyrics and it spans many genres. If you’re looking for an oldie, he says Etta James “At Last” is usually the one that gets picked the most, probably because it’s an easy & danceable waltz, and the string section is elegant.
To help get their couples inspired, Harmony DJ even created a First Dance Playlist on Spotify. It includes classics like “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley and modern options like “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur.
Alia Abboud of Boom Island String Quartet agreed with some of the timeless choices above, but also mentioned some recent requests such as “Beyond” by Leon Bridges, “Conversations in the Dark” by John Legend, and “Anyone” by Justin Bieber. “Don’t overthink it — all that’s important is for your first dance song to have special meaning to you as a couple!” was her sage advice.
