When deciding on summer wedding flowers with your florist, there are a few factors to consider. First, you want to select blooms that are sturdy and can sustain the hot, humid weather of a Minnesota summer. The last thing you’d want is for your bountiful hydrangeas to flop before the reception even begins!
Second, it’s always a good idea to choose flowers that are in season in your area. This is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly! Below, we show you a few of our favorite in-season summer flowers that will look stunning in your bouquets, boutonnieres, centerpieces, and more.
Peonies
The lush and structural petals of peonies are a perfect addition to your summer wedding flowers. They only bloom a few months out of the year (late spring-mid summer) so it does have a short season, but if you are having a wedding April-June these are a must. Peonies come in a range of colors from bright white, like 651 Studio Floral’s bouquet below, to vibrant yellows and reds.
Dahlias
Peak dahlia season is May and June which happen to be some of the most popular months to get married. With a longer growing season than peonies, these flowers have become a popular and more budget-friendly option for bouquets. Fox and Fern Floral used bright fuschia and plum dahlias below and paired them with textural zinnia, carnations, and greenery. Dahlias come in a wide variety of colors, sizes, and shapes making them an easy choice to add to your flowers and decor.
Protea
Proteas are trending in wedding flowers as they are both tropical and modern. They are native to South Africa allowing them to withstand high temps for a warm and humid July or August in Minnesota. These bold blooms have a unique shape and come in a few different varieties and sizes so you can make them the star of the bouquet or incorporate them with other flowers. We love proteas because they are an eye-catching bloom fit for a boho, rustic, contemporary, or tropical arrangement.
Orchids
It’s no surprise that orchids top the list of popular summer wedding flowers. Most orchid varieties grow in tropical climates making them a perfect fit for a summer soirée. Not only can they withstand the heat, but they also make a big impact and can be loosely placed in a cascading bouquet or pulled tight for a more classic structure. Though they do come at a higher price point, their size and shape make for a total show stopper.

Delphinium
When designing the flowers for this August wedding in Minnesota, Summer Harsh Botanical Artistry knew she needed to choose blooms that would last in hot weather throughout the day while making a bold impact. These towering centerpieces below include alliums, amaranthus, and striking blue delphinium. The long stocky structure keeps them tall and they bloom in warmer months and will look great with your summer wedding flowers.
Anemone
The first flower to catch your eye in the beautiful bouquets below is likely the delicate flower with a dark center — an anemone. Small yet bold, this bloom is available most of the year but we love them in bright summer bouquets. You will most often see the white variety, but they also come in red, purple, and pink options.
Zinnia
If you have a late summer wedding, consider using zinnias in your bouquet, centerpieces, floral arch, etc. For this wedding, the florist opted to use blush, orange, and red zinnias for a bold and bright look while providing gorgeous texture. They flourish in summer weather and are often seen in wildflower arrangements.
