Achieving a gorgeous wedding day look begins long before the morning of the big day. In fact, you should start a wedding skincare routine at least six months before the day. Below, beauty expert Emily Schuette of Mary Kay tells us the top four steps to take if you want to have a flawless canvas for your wedding day makeup.
Step 1: Start EARLY and have an actual wedding skincare routine.
Great skin never happens overnight! I recommend brides start a more intensive skincare routine at least 6+ months before their wedding. If you’ve missed this deadline, ANYTIME is a great time to start taking good care of your skin. I tease that “Leonardo Davinci didn’t paint the Mona Lisa on tree bark”. Pre-Wedding skin care is the single best wedding makeup accessory you can have.
Tip: A good skincare routine must include a great cleanser and an oil-free moisturizer. You can’t go less than that and expect glowing “wedding day” ready skin. Most companies formulate their products to work together, so resist the urge to mix multiple brands as it will decrease your results. Also NEVER skip moisturizer even if you have combination to oily skin! Your body will overcompensate and produce extra oil on your face.
Step 2: Find supplements that work!
Start with great cleansing and hydrating, then add one to two other products that have targeted solutions for specific concerns you have. The one supplement I believe every bride should add for a great wedding skincare routine is some type of deep exfoliation treatment such as an at-home microdermabrasion or facial peel. Deep exfoliators remove the top layer of dead skin to reveal fresh layers more quickly which helps with skin texture, glow, acne scarring, and any fine lines.
Tip: Use a beauty consultant to help you narrow down what supplements would work best for your specific concerns! It greatly increases your results and will save you money and time and free up space in your bathroom junk drawer.
Step 3: Be consistent!
Whatever routine you decide on should happen twice a day (morning and night) every day. It takes 21 days to create a habit! You’ll see more results doing a simple 2-3 bottle routine twice a day than a complex routine every now and then.
Tip: If you have acne-prone skin, consistency PLUS the correct products IS the solution. I recommend a non-acne daily skin care program and supplementing with one acne product (such as a blemish control toner) as using too many acne products can dry out your skin and exacerbate the problem. Also look for makeup “tools” hidden in your drawer that are adding bacteria to your face, for example: Blending makeup sponges should be tossed every 3 months!
Step 4: The ten days leading up to your big day are important skincare days!
Don’t skip your routine, and add in something to step up your results instantly that week! I recommend a bio-cellulose lifting mask 2-3 times the week of the wedding. It provides instant lift, instant glow, hydrates for 24 hours, and leaves your face primed and ready for wedding perfect makeup!
