Putting together the perfect outfit for the mother of the bride or groom can be tricky. They might not be the star of the show, but they certainly are a principal. Here’s how to find a mother-of-the-bride dress or a mother-of-the-groom dress so mom will shine without totally stealing the spotlight.
GET THE BRIDE’S GOWN FIRST
Remember that the bride really is the star of this show, so she should get her gown first. Once that’s chosen, you can hone in on styles, lengths, fabrics, and colors for the moms. Many brides want their moms in something different from what they are in, and while a personal decision, it helps to know if the bride is in a ball gown or a sheath before the moms get shopping.
ALLOW TIME FOR MOM’S GOWN TOO
Just like for the bride, the moms need time for alterations and adjustments. Start shopping early, and browse online to get a sense of what’s out there before you make appointments. Just be sure not to limit yourself in your online search. Today’s moms are more trendy than ever so search for “evening gowns” or “formal wear”, which will broaden your search and might give you more youthful options you hadn’t otherwise thought of.

Also know the styles you prefer that make you most comfortable. Love your arms? Consider sleeveless. Prefer to be more covered up? There are many stylish longer-sleeved and to-the-floor gowns out there. Play up your attributes and play down the areas you want to cover up and you won’t go wrong.
COORDINATE COLORS
When deciding how to find a mother-of-the-bride dress, consider choosing a fabric and color that works with the look of the wedding party. If the bride says “wear anything black” then run with it and make it your own. But if they prefer you blend in with the shades of the party, say, pink or blue, it’s nice to follow that lead. She’s probably thinking about the pictures that you’ll have for years to come, so keep that in mind before complaining — and FYI, if she says blue, you don’t have to necessarily go for light blue, ask if navy is ok if you wanted to wear a dark hue.
CHAT WITH THE MOTHER OF HIS/HER FIANCÉ
Don’t forget this step. It could avoid stress and awkward moments later. Talk to your fiancé’s mom so both mothers can look coordinated, not clashing, and so that both love what they’re in. If they feel good, it will show, and everyone will be happier.
