Wedding Trends Look Book 2019: Trend Wedding Matt & Kay

Would you ever allow someone you don’t know to plan your wedding? Probably not, but Matt & Kay did just that! As winners of the $25,000 Trend Wedding 2019 presented by The Wedding Guys, their wedding aired live on ABC affiliate KSTP TV’s Twin Cities Live show in Minneapolis. The twist? Twin Cities Live viewers voted on every aspect of the wedding. From the venue to the catering, wedding gown, attendants attire, table settings, flowers, photography style, cake, and even the honeymoon. We took all the selections and designed a signature wedding, especially for Matt & Kay.

While getting to know Matt & Kay we discovered Kay’s Laotian heritage. The couple was excited to embrace both the traditions of a Laos Baci ceremony and the traditional American ceremony and reception, so we embarked on creating two ceremonies.

The March winter wedding would allow us to create a light and airy feel inspired by the venue’s tall arching windows. Wanting to embrace both ceremonies, we designed a towering circular chiffon canopy with a floral and greenery crown. Large floral pieces were used as tie-backs to create an opening in the drape. The Laotian ceremony took place first, followed by the traditional American ceremony. With the over-abundance of rustic-inspired weddings, we translated our desire for a rustic aesthetic to something fresh and new. We crafted a design that created a nostalgic feeling through collected embellishments. Our backdrop, the warmth of the sunlight through the architectural windows. To this palette, we added dark tones creating layers of richness and depth.

For the ceremony, we selected classic gold Chiavari chairs for a formal style. Programs for both the Laotian and American ceremonies were intentionally propped up on the chairs. Budding branches of pinks and merlot were added into the traditional American ceremony as we revealed spring coming out of winter. Flowers can add a subtle pop of color and texture to any ceremony, and they complimented the couple’s invitation suite.

We were inspired by the time of year, as the long Minnesota winter gave way to the beginning of spring, and mixed this with warm colors of gold, silver, and bronze. Rich mahogany and bronze were added to balance the overall design.

As guests entered the reception space, they passed through a chiffon draped doorway to the sight of ‘LOVE’ letters where the wedding cake was proudly presented. TV viewers had chosen a dark mahogany wood farm table and 40-foot-long traditional head table with mirrored tabletops in a patina finish. We brought in place settings of eclectic antique pieces as a juxtaposition to the clean-lined contemporary interior of the grand venue. Antique chargers, china, and crystal were the surprising WOW factor in the tabletop design. The focal point of the head table was the happy couple, Matt & Kay, framed between two gold trumpet vases featuring tall blooming branches.

The guest tables were placed side by side to create a long harvest dinner table. For the seating, we utilized lighter-toned wood cross-back dining chairs with hand-tied cushions for a more relaxed feel.

The details on the reception table were precise, but not fussy. We selected antique gold chargers, a “country-style” blush linen napkin tied in a knot at each place setting adding a sense of luxury to the rustic tables, while the repetition of the place settings created a dramatic impact. Garlands of flowers and varied size pillar candles became table runners on the long guest tables. Atop the chargers lay the menu cards featuring the options available on the various culinary action stations.

As the sunlight dimmed in the early evening hours, soft amber lighting embraced the ballroom architecture in its nostalgic glory. The ceremony and reception décor was selected with timeless elegance with trend-forward elements to accentuate Matt and Kay’s romantic vision.
